333 Only one Rheinland prelate of this period, Rainald of Dassel, archbishop-elect of Cologne (1159-1164, never consecrated) had a name beginning with 'R.' This may only be coincidence; at any rate Boncomagno sought here to avoid taking sides in the schism at Mainz (see the following note).

334 For imperial diplomas confirming election of an archbishop, see DF.I.514. Barbarossa confirmed the election of the bishop of Regensburg in DF.I.542.

335 Perhaps a reference to the disputed election at Mainz after the death of archbishop Conrad (27 October 1200 between Lupold von Scheinfeld (Leopold, former bishop of Worms, and Philipp's candidate), and Siegfried II of Eppstein (Domprovost, candidate of Innocent III and of Otto von Braunschweig). The schism at Mainz was of great importance for the disputed imperial election, owing to the constituitive role of the archbishop of Mainz; consequently, both Philipp and Otto confirmed their favored candidate.
